Frequently Asked Questions About MiniTemp
Logger
How many times can the MiniTemp Logger
be used?
Generally, the MiniTemp logger has a life of about 1 million samples. This is
how may samples the battery in
the MiniTemp can power. If no samples are taken, the Button has a shelf life
of about 10 years. You can
calculate the approximate
life of a MiniTemp, by using its sample rate value:
Example: What is the life of the MiniTemp if the sample rate is 5 minutes
and run continuously?
MiniTemp Life = Sample Rate x 1,000,000 = 5min. x 1,000,000 = 5,000, 000 minutes
= 9.5 years
This value is lessened if the MiniTempp is stored or operated constantly at
temperatures greater than 40 degrees C.
Reading the MiniTemp does not reduce its life. The user may feel free to read
the MiniTemp as frequently as desired.
How is the age of the MiniTemp
Logger
determined?
The age is specified in number of samples taken. It is displayed in software
screen list of data
samples. Example: "10,903 samples "
How do you turn off the MiniTemp
Logger ?
You do not need to turn it off. You can put it into storage by setting the sample
rate high, such as 255 minutes.
This value will not drain the battery significantly.
What is the "Rollover" setting?
You can program the MiniTemp to stop logging temperature samples after its 2,048
sample memory is full, or
you can enable Rollover: Rollover will cause the MiniTemp to continue storing
temperature samples, but the the
recording will start again at the beginning of the MiniTemp memory, overwriting
past readings. This will progress
forever with further rollovers unitl the MiniTemp battery is expired. Rollover
setting enabled will give you the benefit
of always having a record of the last 2,048 readings. (example always having
a moving record of the last 5 days).
Choose "Rollover Disable" if you wish that the MiniTemp stop logging
data after it has completed its mission of
2,048 samples. Rollover Disable has the benefit that the logged data is secure
and can't be erased unless the
user restarts the MiniTemp.
If you are recording the truck transportation of food, then you will want to
use "Rollover Disable" so that you do
not overwrite the precious data obatined during the transport period.
What is the MiniTemp
Logger data
security:
The MiniTemp data cannot be altered by writing into its 2,048 byte memory. Data
can only be read from memory.
The memory is only erased when a new mission writes data over it. Each MiniTemp
has a globally unique serial
number in internal ROM memory that can be used for positive identification.
The MiniTemp, therefore, cannot be
mixed up with other
MiniTemps. The serial number is displayed in the software screen list of data
samples.
Is the MiniTemp
Logger
waterproof?
The MiniTemp is not claimed to be perfectly waterproof, but it is highly resistant
to severe water stress. It has
occaisionaly been claimed to be rated at IP67 or IP68 (Ingress Protection Ratings).
This is described as
totally protected from dust, and protected from extended periods of immersion
in water. Example: 1 hour in
1 meter of water. Many users of the MiniTemp wish to protect it further by encapsulating
it in a poly bag, glass vial,
wax coating, or secondary miniature container. This extra protection does not
have an effect on temperature
measurement, as heat flow resistance of such is not significant. Also a secondary
container can protect the
MiniTemp in corrosive environments.
What is the Accuracy Of The MiniTemp
Logger ?
The basic accuracy is +/- 1 degree C. Reduced accuracy may exist below -20 degrees
C and above
+40 degrees C. The reduced accuracy may be typically -1.25 degrees C to 1.0
degrees C above +40 degrees C.
When can the MiniTemp
Logger
data be viewed?
You may read the MiniTemp at any time during or after the logging mission. Reading
the MiniTemp will not stop
the mission or erase data. The user must be aware though that the MiniTemp will
continue to log temperature
even in the Reader environment.
