How To Use MiniTemp With Palm™

5 Items Required:

Palm
Handheld

Choose from many models of Palm PDA's. Only newer Palms are recommended as they support the needed faster speed. The Palm must support a Serial HotSync Cable, not USB cable. Some Palm examples are: M500 series, Tungsten, and i705. As there are so many past and new variations of Palms, we cannot test them all for compatibility.

Obtain a Palm™ that has the "Palm Universal Connector"
If compatibility cannot be determined, then Photologic would be happy to assist you with
a trial plan.

Palml Serial HotSync™ Cable

A Serial HotSync Cable is available for many Palms. It can be obtained from Palm or resellers. The cable should be "Universal Connector style" Use Palm part# P10804U. There are also many other manufacturers of a compatible cable, such as Belkin Corp.
This cable is only used for MiniTemp, and is not required to do your normal method of HotSync.

Model P2 Reader
This is the docking device for the Minitemp Logger. Just attach it to the Serial HotSync Cable. It contains the electronics to interface to the logger.

MiniTemp Logger
The logger is so tiny, that you may lose it. Clips and Mounts are available to handle it.
What is a MiniTemp Logger?

Palm ".prc" software
This is the file that you download to your Palm™ using the Palm HotSync operation. Just one file is used. There are no other files required.

Operation:
Put the Minitemp Logger in the docking unit to launch it or read back logged data.

Launch the logger:
You can set the sample rate from 1 to 255 minutes giving you a range from 1.4 days to 364 days.
A label can also be programmed into the logger to easily identify it later.

You can abort any mission in progress just by performing a new launch.

Put the logger where you want to record the temperature. Example: in a shipping container, refrigerator, or chick incubator. The logger's stainless steel casing withstands rough handling, and liquids.
Or, you can attach the logger on a shipping pallet or even a wall using a special mount.

The mount can be bolted, screwed, or riveted to surfaces..
The logger may be programmed or read while it is still mounted on the wall. A person can collect data from up to 50 logger locations. The logger can be permanently riveted to a surface to provide increased security.

When you read the logger, you can see information about it. The serial number is "Globally Unique".

Button Age: -specified in samples.
The approximate life of the logger is one million samples, which is about 10 years if it runs continuously with a sample rate of 5 minutes. The life is reduced a small amount at higher temperatures above +40C.

Read the logger anytime to check it or save the information. It is viewed like a strip chart recorder.
You can advance the plotted graph to display the whole contents of the logger, example: 1 day or up to a year of logging.
Just tap on point in the graph to display the time, date, and temperature at that point. This works very well for quick assessment of the data.

Save Information.
A mini database allows you to save and review up to 50 logger recordings. Scroll through the database to see what's there.
Plot any saved recording.
When you do an ordinary HotSync to a PC, the whole database is transferred automatically, and you can view it with Photologic Ltd. Database Viewer. Use the data for spreadsheets, or even in wordprocessing.
Reuse the logger over and over.

Bonus Step:

You can transfer all the temperature data to a PC.
Use the included Database Viewer software:
Install the Database Viewer CD in Windows.

After performing a normal Palm HotSync, the whole logger database is automatically transferred to the PC. Use the Database Viewer to open the database and display a convenient minigraph of a chosen logger record.
Database Viewer

This is a very useful feature.

Print a quick graph of the logger record just by clicking on the Print Graph button.

The hardcopy record can act as a document that can be certified with a hand signature.
For example this could be used in HACCP programs or vaccine storage certification, or food quality assurance.

Good news: Because of the high quality of modern inkjet and laser printers, the graph has very high sharpness and can clearly display the 0.5C degree resolution of the logger.
Save the data to a Windows folder, then you can use it in spreadsheets such as Microsoft Excel™.
