Example Using MiniTemp™ (Model CP Kit) For Composting

For small or large compost operations:

Use Minitemp "miniature logger" to help determine stages in
the life cycle and health of a comp
ost heap.

This logger device can read heap temperature every 30 minutes and record it in its internal memory.

Palm PDAs can act as good data collectors.
You can display data, and save it. You can even
transfer data to the PC.

Visit the compost heap anytime, and collect the temperature data using a inexpensive Palm PDA

For large or small compost operations, including municipal composting.

The Palm PDA acts as a portable display and data collector.

View from 2 days to 362 days of
temperature history in strip chart form.
All temperatures points are time stamped, with minutes, hour, day.

Palm Screen
View the temperature history right at the field site. Then save it if required.
The data is plotted like a strip chart, and you can scroll down to
see over 8 months of history.

On Site:
See how the compost heap is progressing.

View life and health of compost heap for 60 days or more.

See temperature and date at any point on the plotted chart, just by tapping a point on the Palm screen.
(eg. a tap on a point in plotted chart:
02/12/2004 02:31pm 23.5C 74.3F)

You may also want to save the data and transfer it to a PC later. Then you can make your own report using a speadsheet like MS Excel.

Equipment Required:
Palm++ Palm "Serial" HotSync Cable

Obtain a Palm PDA that has a Universal Connector.

or compatible, eg. "Belkin Corp."

Obtain Photologic Ltd. Model CP logger kit.

Kit Includes MiniTemp logger. What is a MiniTemp Logger?

Install cable in your own kind of tubing or piping, for protection in the compost heap.

Attach the Palm PDA whenever you wish to read/write to the Minitemp logger.

Note:

• No Batteries Required

• Simple Cable Hookup

• Logger can be reused for 3 to 10 years.

• You can extend cable for more custom use.

• You can use this system in all sorts of other applications, eg logging in coolers or greenhouse.

Bonus Feature:

You can transfer all the temperature data to a PC.
Use the included Database Viewer software for PC:
Install the Database Viewer CD in Windows.

After performing a normal Palm HotSync, the whole logger database is automatically transferred to the PC. Use the Database Viewer to open the database and display a convenient minigraph of a chosen logger record.
Database Viewer

This is a very useful feature.

Print a quick graph of the logger record just by clicking on the Print Graph button.

The hardcopy record can act as a document that can be certified with a hand signature.
For example this could be used in HACCP programs or vaccine storage certification, or food quality assurance.

Good news: Because of the high quality of modern inkjet and laser printers, the graph has very high sharpness and can clearly display the 0.5C degree resolution of the logger.
Save the data to a Windows folder, then you can use it in spreadsheets such as Microsoft Excel™.
